Chepstow Castle by Arthur Cole

This is a poetry submission titled โ€œChepstow Castleโ€ from our guest writer,ย Arthur Cole.ย Welsh Historiesย always welcomes poems with a Welsh historical theme, so if you believe you have a poem that fits the bill, please send it to us. Diolch yn fawr iawn.

The following poem is in reference to Chepstow Castle, which you can read more about here. It is a non-native Welsh castle built in the wake of the Norman Invasion of Cymru during the middle 11th century. Please enjoy.

Chepstow Castle

A linear eco system, limestone cliffs abound,

The Wye meanders, a tranquil soothing sound.

Overseen by Chepstow Castle, historically unique,

as storm clouds hover above, a vision of mystique

A medieval relic, a testament to the past,

a fortified stronghold, dark shadows cast.

A conquerorโ€™s grandiose, strategically built,

in history steeped, witnessed violent conflict.

Carnage was wreaked, from battlements high,

repelling usurpers, condemning them to die.

High ranking nobles, wielded power, and fear,

devoid of compassion, their punishment severe.

Totally extravagant, many artisan in the extreme,

with tapestries adorning, whilst ruling supreme

No quarter given, treated peasants like chattel,

constantly feasting, even in the heat of battle.

Steeped in legend, and bloodletting persecution,

a post Roman survivor, the pride of our nation.

Those ruined castle walls, if only they could talk,

such tales of daring do, no doubt theyโ€™d unlock.
