“There are a lot of family traditions linked to baking Welsh Cakes.”Amanda Turned her Mother’s Recipe into a Full-Time Business
Amanda’s eldest daughter recently requested her to bake a Welsh cake Wedding Cake for her wedding. At the age of two, she engaged in school, learning the Welsh language and although she now lives in England, she is very proud of her Welsh roots with her being 100% Welsh.
“When she was organising her wedding she thought what a better idea for a wedding cake than traditionally made Welsh cakes on a stand in order for people to help themselves with tongs. The flavours consisted of traditional and lemon Welsh cakes as not everybody likes currants so we decided to make two different flavours.”
“I started making Welsh cakes over 50 years ago with my mother Linda and she had the best teacher. As she has sadly passed away now I thought it was a lovely nod to my mother to keep her memory alive.”

“Welsh Bakes was born in March 2020 and was a pipe dream of mine for a number of years. When Covid hit and I found myself with lots of spare time. I decided to make my Welsh Bakes dream a reality.”
“Four years on and I now attend numerous farmers markets on a monthly basis and also sell online for delivery throughout the UK.”
“There are a lot of family traditions linked to baking Welsh Cakes in our family.”
“I have gained a huge following because who doesn’t love a Welsh Cake? I send so many Welsh Cakes and Bara Brith in the post on a weekly basis with lots of repeat orders.”
The Welsh cakes for the wedding were traditionally made on a cast iron bakestone which is over 100 years’ old and over 450 Welsh cakes were cooked in order to make up the wedding cake with stocks being replenished almost as quickly as they were being taken to eat. They were also made with Shirgar Welsh butter which adds to their amazing taste. Only the best quality ingredients were used.
“Although I normally make over 1000 Welsh Cakes every week, when making the Welsh cakes for the wedding cake, I was very emotional and privileged to have been asked by my daughter to make the most important cake in her life. It was a lovely thought and really made me feel as if her Mamgu and my mother were there at the Wedding with us.”
“Each Welsh cake was cut out by hand in either the traditional round and also heart-shaped which fitted in with the wedding theme. They are then cooked for approximately two minutes each side and then lastly dusted with sugar for a delicious treat. They are delicious eaten hot or cold.”
“The guests and the staff at the wedding venue all loved the cake and said how unique it was and how they had never seen a Welsh cake wedding cake before. I’ve also had lots of comments on social media saying what a great idea it is.”
“Since the wedding, I have had lots of enquiries from people asking me to supply Welsh Cakes in order for them to stack their own wedding cakes made of Welsh Cakes at their own weddings. This is a cheaper alternative to a traditional wedding cake which can cost upwards of £500.”
I don’t know about you, but when I visit Wales, I’m hunting down Amanda to get myself a Welsh cake! But don’t take my word for it:
Perfect for every occasion!
And….they make gluten free cakes as well…WHATTTT??!!
