Did you know that, at the 73 metres (240 ft) level of the Washington Monument, there is a message written in Cymraeg?
The Washington Monument was once the tallest structure in the world following its completion in 1884. Whilst it is certainly not in the contest anymore, it is arguably among the more significant and symbolic global landmarks.
The message in Welsh reads:
‘Fy iaith, fy ngwlad, fy nghenedl Cymru – Cymru am byth’ (English: ‘My language, my land, my nation of Wales – Wales for ever’).
The stone that the message is written on was imported from a quarry adjacent to Abertawe (Swansea). It was then donated by Welsh citizens living in New York – with the idea believed to have come from a Daniel Jones, who helped found the St David Society within the United States in the 19th century. It helped many displaced Welsh families who emigrated to the US during that time.
