Did you know that the stone effigy of Elizabeth Ferrers, the wife of the last free Prince of Gwynedd and Wales, Dafydd ap Gruffudd, still remains?
Who Was Elizabeth Ferrers?
Elizabeth Ferrers lived between AD 1250 and 1300 and was the daughter of William de Ferrers, 5th Earl of Derby. Her father was directly descended from Henry de Ferrers, a favourite of William the Conqueror who was awarded substantial lands following the Conquest of England. Prior to her marriage to Dafydd ap Gruffudd, she had been married to William Marshal, 2nd Baron Marshal and was a sister of Robert de Ferrers, 6th Earl of Derby – a notorious foe of Edward I who was left virtually landless following his rebellion against the soon-to-be conqueror of Wales.
It is not known what exactly happened to Elizabeth following the gruesome execution of Dafydd but, given that her grave remains in Caerwys, Flintshire, she likely remained in the area.
