The late and great Welsh rugby legend, Ray Gravell (often known simply as “Grav”), was born in Cydweli, Sir Gaerfyrddin (English: Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire), on this day (12 September) in 1951.
Who Was Ray Gravell?
Grav had quite the fascinating life. Of course, he is most remembered for his rugby union career. As a centre, he made 23 appearances for the Welsh national side as well as 4 appearances for the British Lions. For Wales, he was a part of a Welsh side which secured two Grand Slam titles (1976 and 1978).
Following his retirement from playing rugby in 1985, Ray would smoothly transition into a broadcasting role, presenting regular entertainment shows on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru. He would also become an actor, appearing in films Rebecca’s Daughters and Damage, to name but two.
Grav, ever the proud Welshman, became the Grand Sword Bearer at the Eisteddfodau, where he was known by his bardic name of Ray o’r Mynydd (Ray from the Mountain). Sadly, in mid-2007, Ray would have to relinquish his duties as sword bearer following in the amputation of his right leg below the knee – a complication of a long-time battle with diabetes. Six months later, on 31 October 2007, Ray would pass away following a heart attack.
So popular was Ray in so many fields that a public funeral (attended by an estimate of around 10,000 people) was held for him at Parc y Strade (Stradey Park), the former home of Llanelli RFC. Ray will forever remain a Welsh legend.
