Did you know that Golf Halt railway station in Gwynedd, gogledd Cymru (north Wales) was, until 2007, named… clears throat Gorsafawddachaidraigddanheddogleddollônpenrhynareurdraethceredigion (68 characters)?
What Does It Mean?
The name translates to “Mawddach Station and its Dragon beneath the northern peace of the Penrhyn Road on the golden beach of Cardigan Bay” and was named as such in 1968 simply to gain publicity and compete with the more famous Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (58 characters).
The name, however, didn’t count because of the need for an apostrophe and therefore it could not qualify in the same way that Llanfair PG does. Looks like they ran with it until 2007, though, before giving up and settling on the slightly less creative name of “Golf Halt”. Hey, at least they tried.
