Our official Welsh Histories photographer was recently sent to Castell Penlle’r, which is atop of Mynydd y Gwair in the far north of the county of Abertawe (Swansea).

While it may look like nothing but wind turbines built upon large, open lands, it is actually here where once stood a military fortification named Castell Penlle’r. Some of the stoneworks and ditches from the time of the fortification still remain and are visible in a few of the images.

The castle was likely non-native. Whilst this is not completely certain, it was probably established by William de Braose, 2nd Baron Braose, a Marcher Baron of the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
