One of my favourite Welsh cities/towns is Bangor, Gwynedd. It is sometimes awarded a bad reputation by locals but, for me, it is a lovely city and one of the country’s best. With a heritage that spans centuries, Bangor is not only one of Cymru’s oldest cities but also a place of great significance in terms of culture, education and more.

How can we ignore the world-famous Bangor University, which has become a staple of the city (and Cymru)? It produces some of the finest young thinkers in the world. Bangor has a long association with education, dating back to the founding of Bangor University in 1884. The university’s commitment to knowledge and learning has made it a prominent institution.

At the heart of the city stands St. Deiniol Cathedral, a place of worship that dates back to the 6th century. The cathedral is dedicated to the Welsh saint Deiniol, and it plays a vital role in Bangor’s cultural and religious life.
Bangor is famous for its iconic Menai Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford in the early 19th century. The bridge not only connects Bangor to Ynys Môn but also serves as a symbol of engineering excellence.
It also, of course, has Garth Pier – the second longest in Cymru after Llandudno Pier!
The Welsh language is deeply rooted in Bangor, and the city is known as a stronghold of the Welsh culture. The language thrives here, with Welsh being spoken widely, and cultural events celebrating its rich heritage.
Bangor has a strong musical tradition, with local choirs and ensembles participating in Eisteddfodau and other cultural events. The city’s vibrant music scene adds to its cultural charm.
Modern-day Bangor is a hub of innovation and creativity, embracing its historic legacy while looking toward the future. It offers a unique blend of history and
