I have always been aware of them but have only more recently become interested in some of the Welsh stone circles/cairns dotted across the country.
This one is Bryn Cader Faner, which is slightly to the east of Talsarnau within the Ardudwy area of Gwynedd. Bryn Cader Faner dates to sometime within the Bronze Age (3300 to 1200 BC). Its diameter is 8.7 metres (29 ft) and unlike some of the other cairns within Cymru, this one comes with 18 thinner, jagged pillars.
Sadly, Bryn Cader Faner has been subject to substantial damage on at least two occasions. First, by 19th century treasure hunters who appear to have dug a hole in the middle, perhaps looking to loot the graves. Second, by the British Army in the Second World War, when the site of the stones was used for gunnery and target practice.
Regardless, it remains a serene location of outstanding beauty!
