It was on this day (26 December) in 1985 when the Welsh animated children’s television series, Sam Tân (Fireman Sam in English) first aired on S4C.
The series, which has become an iconic symbol of Welsh television, follows the adventures of Sam, a fireman, and all living within the fictional Welsh village of Pontypandy.
The show became so popular that it would later have an English version released on BBC1 in 1987. These days, it is a staple of not only a Welsh but a British childhood. Having been born in 1994, I, too, was raised on Fireman Sam and at one point even wished to become a fireman.
