Today marks 104 years since the birth of legendary Welsh actor, comic, singer and presenter, Harry Secombe.
Who Was Harry Secombe?
Harry Secombe, who was born on 8 September 1921 in St Thomas, Abertawe, to Nellie Jane Gladys and Frederick Ernest Secombe, had a lengthy and storied career in showbusiness.
From being a member of the radio series, The Goon Show (1951–1960), to appearing in hit movies like Oliver! (1968), having more than a dozen albums and writing a couple of books (one of which, Twice Brightly, was the first book to ever be reviewed by a member of the Royal Family, the present King), he achieved it all.
Aside from showbusiness, he also served during the Second World War in each of the North African, Sicilian and Italian campaigns.
He would pass away on 1 April 2001 at the age of 79 after a battle with prostate cancer. More than 20 years after his death, he remains a certified Welsh legend of showbusiness.
