Did you know that former President Jimmy Carter, who very recently passed away at 100 years of age, was a huge fan of Cymru?
Where’s the Proof?
Carter was known as a big fan of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (who, coincidentally, we covered on the page earlier today). Such a big fan was he that the existence of the plaque in Westminster Abbey made in honour of Thomas was largely supported by Carter – he was even involved with and officially opened the Dylan Thomas Centre in Thomas’ hometown of Abertawe (Swansea).
As pictured in 1995, he enjoyed flyfishing in Cymru, too, with a favourite spot being Llyn Clywedog near Llanidloes, Powys.
For me, as a historian with a keen interest in the subject of the American Presidents, Carter remains a favourite and his humanity will be missed.
