Did you know Roald Dahl, author of many popular children’s novels, was born in Cymru?
Who Was Roald Dahl & Was He Welsh?
Roald was born on this day (13 September) in 1916 in Llandaf, Caerdydd, to Norwegian parents Harald and Sofie Dahl. Many of Dahl’s fictional characters, such as the dreaded Mrs. Trunchbull from Matilda, were inspired by his childhood experiences growing up in the area.
It must be said, however, that Dahl was (and still is) a polarised figure, with accusations of racism, sexism and other forms of prejudice often made against his writing.
Despite this, the popularity of Dahl and his books has endured, with many cinematic adaptations (including three Hollywood blockbusters for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory alone) having hit the big screen over the decades.
Some of Dahl’s most famous works include: The Gremlins (1943), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), Fantastic Mr Fox (1970), The BFG (1982), The Witches (1983) and Matilda (1988).
