It is time for the great Dic Siôn Dafydd debate?
Which famous Welsh person, in your opinion, most fits the bill of being a Dic Siôn Dafydd?
What is a Dic Siôn Dafydd?
There are a few different definitions for the term Dic Siôn Dafydd, which originated from the 18th century satirical ballad, “Cerdd Dic Siôn Dafydd”.
One of these refers to every Welsh person who speaks solely in English, though I biasedly conclude this one to be unfair as many patriotic Welshmen and women cannot speak Welsh (and I would argue this is the fault of centuries of oppression, Welsh not etc rather than the Welsh people).
A second, popular definition is the one I include in the image and I far prefer this one as it more closely resembles the character of Dic Siôn Dafydd from the ballad, which sees the Welshman move to London and develop a pompous, snobbish attitude towards Wales and the Welsh.
Feel free to let me know your pick in the comments section.

The second half of 2025 began the trend of including “did you know?” type fun facts, meaning there is plenty of learning to be done with this collection. A similar Christmas offer was done last year with great success, so let’s do it again. It’s on me.
This year’s magazines have been written, created and designed by Niklas George (Welsh Histories founder and owner). All images used in these issues of Welsh Histories Magazine include the respective owner’s details, where applicable.
Happy reading!
