The Llyn Fawr Hoard

Did you know that, between 1909 and 1912, one of the most extensive Welsh archaeological discoveries was made in Llyn Fawr, Rhondda Cynon Taf (or possibly the Vale of Neath but that’s a whole other topic) and is therefore called the Llyn Fawr Hoard?

What is the Llyn Fawr Hoard & What Made it Special?

Llyn Fawr is a large lake which was deepened between 1909 and 1912. After all, the population of the Rhondda was one which had swelled enormously during the Industrial Revolution, from a population of just 542 in 1801 to one of 152,781 by 1911. More water was required to meet the demand. The lake was doubled in size, from 12 acres to 24 acres and, during this process, the Llyn Fawr Hoard was discovered.

The Llyn Fawr Hoard is a hoard of Bronze-to-Iron Age objects containing swords, sickles, spears and more – it is highly likely that these items were placed in the original, smaller lake as votive offerings.

The Llyn Fawr Hoard is today in the possession of National Museum Wales.
