There are a couple of birthdays for Welsh landmarks today. Here’s a little bit about them.
Only Welsh Skyscraper
Did you know that Cymru only has one skyscraper? Its construction was completed on this day (12 September) in 2009!
The Tower, Meridian Quay, Abertawe (Swansea), is a residential building which stands at 107 m (351 ft) tall, which puts it 7 meters over the necessary threshold to qualify as a skyscraper.
The tower has 29 storeys.
The Only Transporter Bridge in Wales
It was on this day (September 12) in 1906 when Pont Gludo Casnewydd (the Newport Transporter Bridge), designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin, opened for the first time.
It is one of only ten transporter bridges (a transporter bridge being a suspended ferry operated by a high-level boom held up from towers at each end) remaining in the world and one of only two, with Tees Transporter Bridge in northern England, remaining in Britain.
