Bore da, bawb.
I would like to begin the day by remembering legendary Welsh boxer, Eddie “The Merthyr Marvel” Thomas, who was born in Merthyr Tydfil on this day (27 July) in 1926.
Like many young, working-class Welshmen living in the south at that time, Eddie left school as a teenager to go and work down the mine (particularly Cwmddu). He worked alongside his father, Urias Thomas, who had lost an arm as a result of a mining disaster.
Once an adult, Eddie would turn his attention to boxing whilst continuing to work down the mines – something he continued to do even after becoming a success, winning each of the European, Empire and British Championships. Eddie, a welterweight, boasted an excellent record of:
48 Fights
40 Wins
13 by Knockout
6 Losses
2 Draws
Again, he did all of this whilst continuing to work down the mines, so you know he was tough as nails. He was also known as the “Singing Boxer” for entertaining crowds with “Bless This House” after every fight and I am almost certain it was better than Tyson Fury’s attempts at singing “American Pie” following his fights. Thomas also sang in the choir Cyfartha Church in Merthyr.

Following his boxing career, Eddie would become one of the greatest boxing coaches of all time. His coaching franchise included the likes of World Featherweight Champion (and fellow Merthyr lad) Howard Winstone, Colin “The Punch” Jones and Scottish World Lightweight Champion, Ken Buchanan. Winstone, especially, was a favourite of Thomas and was the reason he returned to boxing as a coach, having previously lost his passion for the sport.
Thomas was also one of the first people to be at the scene of the Aberfan mining disaster on 21 October 1966. By then a very experienced miner, he used this experience to assist with the ongoing rescue efforts and helped to salvage many of the children’s bodies (many of which he salvaged himself). He would never speak about what he saw at Aberfan.
Long associated with Merthyr, he would become Mayor in 1994. Sadly, he would pass away from cancer three years later on 2 June 1997 at the age of 71.
He was, is and forever will be a Welsh legend.
