Here’s a question for you: What’s your favourite Cymru-themed movie that touches upon a historical topic?
For me, I very much enjoyed Pride (2014). Whereas I feel it could have benefitted from casting a few more actually Welsh actors and actresses, it still made for heart-warming viewing.
What’s it About?
Here’s a short extract from an article I wrote about the film two years ago:
‘The film is written by Stephen Beresford, directed by Matthew Warchus and tells the true (though, admittedly, saturated at times for the screen) historical story of the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign. The campaign supported Welsh miners under threat of losing their jobs as a result of the Tory Thatcher government (1979-1990).

What ensued was an often comedic, sometimes sad and always rousing drama which aimed to show the solidarity shared between two groups which would appear very different on the surface. The film focuses on the efforts made by the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign to win the trust of an extremely macho group of men during a time period where such men were often (though not always, as shown in the film) distrusting of LGBTQ+ people because of the times and even, ironically, because of the Thatcher government’s other war against the LGBTQ+ community, which was heightened with the government’s Section 28.

Section 28, of course, was the Thatcherist legislation which brought in a series of laws across the United Kingdom that prohibited the “promotion of homosexuality” by local authorities. Section 28 was in effect from 1988 to 2000 in Scotland and from 1988 to 2003 in England and Cymru. Therefore, it made perfect sense that these two groups – both often persecuted by an aggressive Thatcherist regime – would unite in arms. As the film depicts, however, the differences shared between the two groups means that is never quite that simple.’
