On 30 January 2026, Pont y Borth, known in English as the “Menai Suspension Bridge”, will turn 200 years old! The bridge was opened in 1826. But if you didn’t already know, there’s also an only transporter bridge in Wales that is now an important landmark.

Pont y Borth connects Ynys Môn (Anglesey) to Gogledd Cymru (North Wales) and was designed by the famed Scottish civil engineer, the “Colossus of Roads”, Thomas Telford.

Vehicles are still permitted to drive on the bridge, with weight restrictions in place since the bridge’s reopening in February of 2023.

To put into perspective how old the bridge is: Napoleon had been dead less than five years; Big Ben (1859) and the Eiffel Tower (1889) had yet to be built’ Abraham Lincoln was a child and the Victoria Era was still some way off.
