Did you know that in Rhuthun, Denbighshire, there still stands Carchar Rhuthun (Ruthin Gaol) – a Pentonville prison with history dating back to 1654?
Though it is now a museum (Amgueddfa Carchar Rhuthun), its insidious history is still told (and visible) within its walls.
What is Ruthin Gaol?

What’s more gruesome is that there was a hanging at the prison. A William Hughes of Denbigh was hanged at the age of 42 on 17 February 1903 for the murder of his wife. Though he plead for insanity, his pleas were ignored.
If you are ever up in the north, make sure to visit Carchar Rhuthun. I worked there briefly in 2019 and can attest to all of the staff being knowledgeable, helpful and fun.
