I love maps and I love promoting Cymraeg as and where I can, so why not do both in one post? I love a good Welsh map… though this one concerns me more than most. Work must be done.
What is This Map?

This map shows Cymru in the year 1870. Areas highlighted in red are parts where the majority of inhabitants spoke Cymraeg at that time. The map on the right, in contrast, shows where the majority of Welsh speakers reside in the present. It is estimated, according to the 2021 census, that around 538,300 people today speak Cymraeg in Cymru, which is around 17.8% of the population.
Having looked at these maps and having considered where Cymraeg is today, it is clear to me that even more can and must be done to strengthen and preserve it.
