After sharing a fun fact about Cardiff Castle you didn’t know and some important castles around Cymru like Caerphilly Castle; Raglan Castle, Penrhyn Castle, Beaumaris Castle, it was time to talk about Skenfrith Castle.
A History of Skenfrith Castle
This is Skenfrith castle, another non-native castle which makes up the “Three Castles” of Sir Fynwy, alongside White Castle and Grosmont. Each of the three castles were built by the Normans following in the wake of their Conquest of England and their invasion of Cymru. They were designed to subjugate the Welsh and protect the route to Hereford.
It would become a property of Edward I (Longshanks) in the fall of the 13th century, with Edward stripping the castle of its military utility during his Conquest of Cymru. As was also the case with White Castle, this led to to Skenfrith gradually falling into obscurity and ruin.
By 1613, the castle was written as “ruinous and decayed”, rendering the castle little more than an obsolete structure no longer of any significance.
The castle came under state ownership in 1936 and is today in the hands of Cadw as a Grade II Listed building.
